  1. R. S. Forste says:

    This is the poem:

Portrait of a Near Forgotten Dream

In the beginning, you were a magic formula
Whispered near my ear in a garbled tongue,
A dream I knew I’d had once, coming close to,
    But never quite reaching, remembrance.
On your feet at the front of the room
Like some shining deity: Ichabod, God of Gangling,
A refugee from Oz, patron of scarecrows,
All grace and agility, toy jumping jack
    Flexing your wooden joints, somewhere
Between a foal and Saint Bernard

Your face was a boardwalk and your eyes
    Two tarnished pennies dropped unnoticed
To be heated in the sun upon it. Your nose
A surfboard hauled up from the waves
And left to trip passersby on the planks.
Nearby, your mouth was a beached eel,
    Narrow, draggled dry and abandoned
At parental command, while the browning
Seaweed clumps of your hair are tousled
By the ocean breeze. I hearken, listen for
The incantation lost in the roar of the surf.
